Natalia Vázquez Purriños is a Research Engineer at MBZUAI. She holds dual undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Physics, as well as a master’s degree focused on mathematical optimization. Before pursuing her current academic path, Natalia completed the first year of a degree in Medicine. During this experience, she realized that her primary interests lay in quantitative and mathematical approaches to biomedical research. She became convinced that the future of medicine will increasingly rely on advanced mathematical, statistical, and computational methods. Her current research focuses on high-dimensional statistics through the lens of mathematical optimization. In particular, she develops methods for integrating digital health data with genome-wide association studies, with the aim of discovering novel genetic variants and gaining a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying human health and disease. In her free time, Natalia enjoys travelling and has visited more than 50 countries.
